Founded in 2020, ARCS promotes general mathematical research and
scholarship with a particular focus on the study of Rings and Algebras. There are
four aspects to this mission:
1. Research and Discovery
ARCS supports mathematics research and the dissemination of
discoveries within the worldwide mathematics community.
ARCS fosters interaction, communication, and collaboration through research visits,
conferences, workshops, and seminars. ARCS also promotes the application
of Ring and Algebra theory to other areas
of mathematics, including Dynamical Systems, Functional Analysis, and
the study of Operator Algebras. In this regard, ARCS
fosters reciprocal relationships between algebraists and experts in other
areas of mathematics to encourage open dialogue, support the free exchange of ideas,
and facilitate cross-fertilization of methods and techniques. ARCS strongly
values pure (also called basic) research, in which one acknowledges that many of
the scientific discoveries that benefit society are the result of seeking answers to
deep questions motivated solely by curiosity and without concern for
immediate applications.
2. Education and Training
ARCS supports mathematical training and education for junior researchers and students
of mathematics. ARCS contributes to the training of the next generation of
mathematicians and researchers through activities that include postdoctoral supervision,
serving as a thesis advisor to Ph.D. Students, leading undergraduate research, and
organizing seminars and conferences that are either devoted to, or have components
addressing, professional development.
3. Outreach
ARCS promotes mathematical understanding and mathematics education at all
levels. ARCS organizes programs and events to contribute to K-12 education,
as well as enhance the public awareness and perception of mathematics, in the communities
surrounding Colorado Springs and beyond. ARCS endorses the idea that mathematics
education supports the public good and is a powerful force in pursuing economic
and social equality.
4. Building and Sustaining Community
ARCS aims to create a community of scholars that is welcoming, inclusive, supportive,
and inspiring. ARCS activities are designed to promote partnership, collaboration,
networking, and cooperation. ARCS also makes efforts to sustain connections and
involvement among participants after conferences, workshops, or in-person meetings
conclude. Moreover, ARCS makes active efforts to engage and support members of
groups that are traditionally underrepresented in mathematics.
